jeremiah 33:14 commentary

Jeremiah 33:14 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the gracious promise that I have spoken to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. "The good word" is, according to Deuteronomy 28:1-14, the blessing which the Lord has promised to His people if they obey His commands; cf. Let us then learn to embrace his promises, so that none of us may look for this or that, but know that then only he will be propitious to us, when we lean on his word. Jeremiah now shews why God had promised that there would be a quiet habitation for shepherds, so that no one would by force take away their flocks. But instead of pitting the traditions against each other, perhaps there is a kinship-rope knotting us together in the final two verses of this text: the first (Jeremiah 33:17) a promise for a king of the line of David, the second (verse 18) a promise that there shall also be no end to the line of Levitical priests before [God]. While we might claim the Messiah in our tradition, we can never lay claim to the Levitical birthright or Priestly office that this verse lifts up. The recent rise in acts of anti-Semitism in the United States make this a danger we must take seriously. But God calls it his good word, because he had promised to be the deliverer of his people. ii. Though the promise may sometimes work slowly towards an accomplishment, it works surely. 1. For over a year the Babylonians besieged the city. The everlasting love of Yahweh for Israel. Jeremiah 33:14-26 14-26 To crown the blessings God has in store, here is a promise of the Messiah. Jeremiah 33:14-20The New Revised Standard Version. A model of repentance never fulfilled. Besides, in Jeremiah 23:6 Israel is named together with Judah, instead of which, we have here, in Jeremiah 33:16, Jerusalem; accordingly, the name "Jahveh Tsidkenu" is referred to Jerusalem, while in Jeremiah 23:6 it is predicated of the sprout of David. Then we may take the comfort of what we have when God has had his dues out of it. As a king that shall be praised by his subjects: "This is the name whereby they shall call him" (so the Chaldee reads it, the Syriac, and vulgar Latin); "this name of his they shall celebrate and triumph in, and by this name they shall call upon him." The worst has not yet happened, but it is inevitable. 23:5-6). That's what people are saying today. God tells Jeremiah that he has not. Historically, of course, the Davidic line did not return to the throne, so passages like this (and its parallel, Jeremiah 23:5-6), were in time interpreted to be speaking about the coming ideal ruler, the Messiah. (u) "verbum bonum", V. L. Pagninus, Montanus, Cocceius. the best of all; this is the better thing provided for saints Some texts describe it as polluting Gods land (see Numbers 35) or even being the very reason for the exile, that the land might recover and heal (see also Ezekiel 36). By him Judah shall be saved from wrath and the curse, and, being so saved, Jerusalem shall dwell safely, quiet from the fear of evil, and enjoying a holy security and serenity of mind, in a dependence upon the conduct of this prince of peace, this prince of their peace. Thus saith the LORD; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say shall be desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast, The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the LORD of hosts: for the LORD is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. The literal interpretation which sees here a promise, not of One Davidic King alone, namely the Messiah, "but a series of Davidic descendants to occupy the throne of David"[8] is incorrect. "I will cause a Branch of righteousness to arise unto David " (Jeremiah 33:16). 2. Much like the standard Childrens Sermon answer, where do our minds immediately go when we read about the true branch of David who shall enact justice and righteousness in the land? pp. Jeremiah 33:22. The prophetic word from God was realized in the person of Jesus Christ, the person that the disciples, the apostles, and the early Christian authors believed was the Davidic king who would sit on the throne of Israel nay, the throne of heaven! On this first Sunday of Advent, one cannot read the prophecy of a righteous Branch springing up for David in anything but a messianic light. As noted in the chapter introduction, the only difficulty here is the apparent promise of the perpetual succession of his descendants upon the throne of David and also that of the permanent, unending restoration of the Levitical priests with their animal sacrifices, events which are denied absolutely by other passages of the Word of God. Time is like a river and its current is swift. So here is God's invitation, challenge to Jeremiah, "Call unto Me." Such is the word of promise and hope in this text. We have rejected the device which would remove this passage from God's Word; and the best explanation of the true meaning, as we see it, is that of Payne Smith. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord . Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. God responds to this lament with a promise of redemption and healing for Israel (Jeremiah 33:6-18). To a people devastated by loss, Jeremiahs prophecy offered hope: The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah (33:14). The public worship of God shall be diligently and constantly attended upon: They shall bring the sacrifice of praise to the house of the Lord. Who is that Branch of righteousness growing up out of David? Jeremiah knew he had been called to preach a tough message. The peace of the country. In fact, this promise helps us see the breadth of the hope promised by God to David and his line, which includes all who put their hope in the Branch. Chapter 33 1 Jeremiah was still confined to the Court of the Guard when the word of Yahweh came to him a second time, as follows, 2 'Yahweh who made the earth, who formed it and set it firm -- Yahweh is his name -- says this, 3 "Call to me and I will answer you; I will tell you great secrets of which you know nothing. The difference made in the repetition of that promise is really unimportant. As this covenant of nature cannot be broken by men, so also the covenant of grace of the Lord with David and the Levites cannot be broken, i.e., annulled. (90) So is the Vulg., suscitabo, I will awake, or rouse; and also the Sept. and the Targ. And that is a theologically sound way of reading this passage from Jeremiah. 2. That son is the Son of God, the Messiah. Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying, Thus saith the LORD the maker, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name; Call unto me, and I will answer thee ( Jeremiah 33:1-3 ), Well now, he's just been calling unto the Lord. miah 33:14-16 Commentary on First Reading by Kathryn Schifferdecker. The days will come, though they are long in coming. This promise of the Messiah we had before (Jeremiah 23:5; Jeremiah 23:5), and there it came in as a confirmation of the promise of the shepherds whom God would set over them, which would make one think that the promise here concerning the shepherds and their flocks, which introduces it, is to be understood figuratively. (Revelation 20:6). Christ is here prophesied of, 1. hinneh yamim baim) has appeared 16 times so far in Jeremiah referring to coming judgment on Judah and the surrounding nations. But during the Kingdom Age, there will be offerings in Jerusalem. The confirmations of these promises, which follow them in Jeremiah 33:19-26, are each introduced by separate headings, perhaps not merely to render them more prominent, but because the Lord revealed them separately to the prophet; but it by no means follows from this that they are later additions, without any connection. On this first Sunday of Advent, one cannot read the prophecy of a "righteous Branch" springing up for David in anything but a messianic light. times of the Messiah; and which God, that is true and cannot lie, Proud member 16 In those . Instead, Jesus restored the Kingdom of God to the whole world and is in the process of bringing that Kingdom to the fruition promised here in Jeremiah 33. Hast thou not seen what this people have spoken, saying, 'The two families which the Lord hath chosen, these He hath rejected?' And now, in this passage, Jeremiah speaks of the restoration not simply of daily life (as momentous as that is), but also of one of the chief signs of Gods favor, the restoration of the Davidic line. Jeremiah was a sensitive man who wore his heart on his sleeve. It shall not be a habitation of soldiers, not shall there be tents and barracks set up to lodge them, but there shall be shepherds; tents; for they shall hear no more the alarms of war, nor shall there be any to make even the shepherds afraid. 1 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying, 2 Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name; 3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. Jeremiah 33:25. Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers. When it is so, let us learn to exercise faith and patience, so that our souls may not tremble, though Gods promises may not every moment manifest their power by being actually fulfilled. "Ye (Christians) are a spiritual house, a royal (or holy) priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (1Peter 2:5). Notice there's no mention here of sin offerings. attention, and even as calling for admiration. And Jeremiah in this 33 rd chapter reminds us that even in the midst of life's worst woes, even in a time of collapsing securities and the disorientation that always results, God has a word. But the Babylonians destroyed Davids city, burned Solomons temple, and took Davids heirs into exile. No sooner does anything appear than it is swept away, and another comes in its place. It is a word of hope, but not nave hope. He imparts righteousness to his church, for he is made of God to us righteousness; and believers are made the righteousness of God in him. Amen. And thats exactly what happened. Thus saith Jahveh: If my covenant with day and night doth not exist, if I have not appointed the laws of heaven and earth, Jeremiah 33:26. And this mode of speaking is fitly adopted as to the promises of God; for they seem for a time to he dormant without any effect, or seem to disappear or vanish away. For God declares, that his promise would not be void, as its effects would shortly be evident, even when his mercy was known by the ten tribes and by the kingdom of Judah. his person and office: that I will perform that good thing In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness. which I have promised unto the The mention of Jerusalem instead of Israel is connected with the general scope of our prophecy, viz., to comfort the covenant people over the destruction of Jerusalem (Jeremiah 33:4.). Oddly enough, Jeremiah was in prison for telling King Zedekiah the exact message God instructed him to share. The meaning of the Prophet is, that God would at length render evident the power of his word, by fulfilling it. 1176. A demon, , is the agent in the Greek historian, and a demon is the agent in the case mentioned in the text, Luke 9:42. And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first. As Jellie noted, "It was impossible, and now is impossible, to restore: (1) either a literal reign of David's descendants or (2) the Levitical priesthood, for two reasons: (a) Their genealogical tables have been irrecoverably lost, and (b) nothing short of a direct decision from God Himself could distinguish the descendants of David or Levi from the descendants of any other of the twelve tribes of ancient Israel."[9]. On the meaning of this promise, see the remarks on Jeremiah 23:5-6. Nam sacerdos erat quasi medius inter Deum et populum, rex autem representabat Dei personam. The general idea contained in the words "the Levites," placed first, is more clearly defined by the apposition "the priests," and restricted to the priests of the tribe of Levi. Happy New Year! Imprisoned for angering the king by speaking Gods truth to royal power (Jeremiah 32:3-5), Jeremiah has been lamenting to the Lord that the city will fall, and that God will do nothing to help. And it's just an offering of fellowship with God as I just give my life to You, God, and the eating of it signifies that oneness with God and the fellowshipping with God. In the midst of impending doom, a sign of hope is enacted. (Note: Continebatur autem salus populi duabus istis partibus. To crown all these blessings which God has in store for them, here is a promise of the Messiah, and of that everlasting righteousness which he should bring in (Jeremiah 33:15; Jeremiah 33:16), and probably this is that good thing, that great good thing, which in the latter days, days that were yet to come, God would perform, as he had promised to Judah and Israel, and to which their return out of captivity and their settlement again in their own land was preparatory. This is the Here is a further prediction of the happy state of Judah and Jerusalem after their glorious return out of captivity, issuing gloriously at length in the kingdom of the Messiah. It was just an offering of fellowship. Jeremiah 1:1-16 - The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, 2 to whom the word of . This is not in and of itself bad: we are Christian preachers, after all. Also, read the description of the New Jerusalem in Revelation's last two chapters. They are described in Hebrews. Today we hear the story of the prophet Jeremiah, who was born in Josiahs time, but went on the prophesy during the darkest times of Judahs history. "Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins, in his own blood, and made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. In the cities of Judah there will be joy, in the pastures there will be peace, and in the temple there will be the sound of praise to God (10-13).Once more a king of the dynasty of David will rule over Israel, and Jerusalem will be the city of Gods salvation. This is one of the ways we as Christians make sense of verse 17 with its promise that Never shall there be an end to [the line of] David, a man sitting upon the throne of the house of Israel. The discrepancy between the recorded promises of God in Jeremiahs time and the lack of an Israelite king in Jesus time is perhaps one of the reasons why Luke and Matthew took such pains to record the parentage of Jesus through King David. So God never broke His covenant. u "verbum bonum", V. L. Pagninus, Montanus, Cocceius. The priesthood formed the medium of approach for the people into divine favour. But God's promise was true. 33:3 ) ; even the coming of the Messiah, and what concerns The designation of the priests as "the Levites" corresponds, accordingly, to the kings of the family of David. Especially in this season of Advent, we speak words of hope. Notice that Jeremiah 33:17. says that, from the time this prophecy was given, David would not lack a descendant to sit on the throne not of the house of Judah, but of the house of Israel. The armies of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, are advancing on Jerusalem. 12 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Again in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, shall be a habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down. This makes sense when we recall from Ezekiel 17:22-24. the prophecy of the transfer of the Davidic throne from Judah to Israel. His situation looked bleak, as this was not a good time to be a true prophet of God. As Moses's altar is called Jehovah-nissi (Exodus 17:15), and Jerusalem Jehovah-shammah (Ezekiel 48:35), intimating that they glory in Jehovah as present with them and their banner, so here the city is called The Lord our righteousness, because they glory in Jehovah as their righteousness.
